Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to buy a harp at the beginning? No. I recommend you hire a harp from Pilgrim Harps or from Salvi Music for the initial few months. Information about harps can be found at Hire a harp - Pilgrim Harps or Salvi Music London Showroom - Salvi Harps and Lyon & Healy Harps
How do I know which harp to get? I will advise which type of harp to rent to best suit your needs. At the point of considering purcahsing a harp, I will guide you so you have the best harp for you.
Do I need any previous experience of music? A previous knowledge of music does make it easier but is not a necessity. All curriculums are designed to meet every pupil's individual need.
What music will I need to start learning the harp? Helen has written her own tutor book. The Albertine Harp Tutor. You can get a copy of this from Helen directly.
Do I need to bring my harp to lessons? No. You are welcome to bring your harp with you if you need help with stringing or tuning or are preparing for a performance and wish to play on your own as part of that preparation.
Where are lessons taught? Helen usually teaches in her own fully equipped studio.
Do I have to take exams? No. You may take exams if you wish to do so, and some students like to take exams to show how much they have progressed. Exams are not a necessity.
May I play in concerts? Of course. If you wish to take part in a concert, please make sure you tell Helen, so together we can make sure you are fully prepared and have the right repertoire. Everyone is encouraged to take part in the Pupils' Concerts - and playing in the ensemble is always enjoyable.
